John Solaro, PhD

Dr. Solaro received his PhD in Physiology from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine in 1971. In 1972, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Physiology at the Medical College of Virginia. As a British-American Heart Fellow in 1975-76, he worked with Professor S.V. Perry at the University of Birmingham in England and as a Fogarty Fellow in 1986 he worked with Professor David Allen at University College London. He moved to the University of Cincinnati in 1977 and then to University of Illinois at Chicago in 1988, where he has been Distinguished University Professor and Head of Physiology and Biophysics. Solaro was the holder of an NHLBI Merit Award still funded as an RO1 in its 36 year, is MPI on another RO1, is PI of a program project grant on Maladaptation in Heart Failure in its 15th year of funding, and is PI of an NIH Training Grant in its 25 year of funding. He also holds a joint grant from the Medical Research Council of Great Britain with Professor Ming Lei of Oxford University. He has served as a full member of the NIH Physiology Study Section and chaired two other study sections. He serves on several editorial boards and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. He is past Secretary General of the International Society for Heart Research, past president of the Cardiac Muscle Society and the Association of Chairs of Physiology.
